Ali Abd al Latif, a non-Arab led the first nationalist movement in 1921.
- Founded the United Tribes Society, that called for an independent Sudan .The government however, opposed

Nationalism temporarily disappeared after Ali Abd al Latif. In the 1930s, nationalism reemerged and influenced Sudan and its people.Nationalists feared the result of a union between Sudan and Egypt. The Bristish however, wanted to have a
independent Sudan while Egypt wanated a unification. This was all settled with the Treaty of Alliance in 1936. This helped drive the British troops out of Sudan. Britain and Egypt did not agree on Sudan's independence.

Nationalists and religious parties diverged about wether Sudan should opt for indepence or for unification with Egypt. Adb ar Rahman al Mahdi was the spokesman for indepence while Ali al Mirghani favored indepence form Egypt.
